Diocese in LPA
The Diocese of the Canary Islands, attached to the province of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Seville, Spain. It currently has 189 priests and covers 299 parishes.
The first diocese in the Canary archipelago was that of the Fortuna Islands, erected by Pope Clement VI in 1351, with its seat in Telde.
The current Cathedral of the Canary Islands, located in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs, and its construction began in 1497.
In 1951, Pope Pius XII proclaimed St. Anthony Mary Claret as co-patron saint of the diocese, sharing this honor with the Blessed Virgin Mary of El Pino, principal patroness of the diocese.
